Know the Technology

Radar, Camera or Overhead?

Launch monitors read your swing in different ways. Pick a type to see how it works and where it shines.

Compact radar launch monitor on turf beside a golf ball

Radar launch monitors

Doppler radar tracks the ball and club by bouncing signals off them. Radar units are compact and typically portable, popular for both range and indoor use.

Strengths

  • Easy to carry between bay and range
  • Great outdoors, works indoors with enough room
  • Usually sits beside or behind the ball

Keep in mind

  • Needs more space indoors than overhead units
  • Spin and club data can vary by model

Examples: Garmin Approach R10, Trackman 4, Rapsodo and SkyTrak (radar plus camera)

Floor camera launch monitor beside a ball on a hitting mat

Camera (photometric) monitors

High-speed cameras photograph the club and ball around impact and calculate the flight. Camera units are known for detailed impact data and are very popular in home simulators.

Strengths

  • Rich impact data
  • Excellent indoors
  • Many models place the unit on the floor

Keep in mind

  • Needs good lighting and a clean hitting zone
  • Floor units need room beside the ball

Examples: Foresight GCQuad and GC3, Bushnell Launch Pro, Garmin Approach R50

Ceiling-mounted overhead launch monitor above a hitting mat

Overhead (ceiling-mounted) systems

Overhead launch monitors mount above the hitting area and look down at the ball and club. They free up floor space and suit dedicated, permanent bays.

Strengths

  • Nothing on the floor to trip over or hit
  • Clean, permanent installation
  • Often a large hitting zone

Keep in mind

  • Needs sufficient ceiling height
  • Less portable: made for a fixed room

Examples: Trackman iO, Uneekor EYE XO2, Foresight Falcon, ProTee VX, Golfin IDRA II, Full Swing Sport Series

Technology categories are general. Individual models vary, so we match the right unit to your room.

Where Will Your Bay Go?

Garage, Basement, Bar or Barn

Every space has its own best layout. Choose yours.

Garage

Most garages are 20 feet deep or more, which is plenty. We plan the bay around your cars, storage and ceiling, and add a retractable or fold-away option when the garage has to work double duty.

Basement

Basements make wonderful lounge-style bays: quiet, dark and ready for a bar and seating. We check ceiling height and ductwork before we plan the monitor and projector.

Bar or Restaurant

Commercial bays are built for groups: durable surfaces, bookable bays, sound control and a layout that keeps food and drinks flowing.

Club or Facility

Club suites match the clubhouse with premium screens, seating and lighting, and support leagues, lessons and events.

Barn style golf simulator building on a ranch

Barn or Outbuilding

A dedicated golf building gives you ceiling height and width to spare, and room for a full lounge, bar and multi-sport options.
